Playoff Update: Region 8 Dominates
With the District titles on the line Wednesday night, all six of our local high school teams are still alive in the SCHSL baseball and softball playoffs with a total of 14 teams from Region 8 in the championship games. Here’s where things stand:
CLASS A SOFTBALL: All four Region 8A teams are vying for district titles, with Green Sea-Floyds, Latta, and Johnsonville undefeated in the district playoffs. Green Sea-Floyds won the District VIII title on Tuesday night, defeating Bamberg-Ehrhardt 17-0 for the title.
Latta will be hosting Branchville on Wednesday and Johnsonville will host Hannah-Pamplico. Both won their previous encounters, with Latta defeating Branchville 13-1 in round two, and Johnsonville edging Hannah-Pamplico 8-7 in round one. The Flashes also got a 26-1 win over Hardeeville in round two. Both seem likely to progress to the Lower State tournament beginning on Saturday, May 5.
Lake View, meanwhile, took a 10-0 loss from East Clarendon in round one and will have to face the them again on Wednesday night. The Wolverines have swept all of their district opponents so far, but if Lake View is successful, they’ll have to defeat East Clarendon one more time to claim the district title.
CLASS A BASEBALL: Lake View and Johnsonville have both made it to district title games undefeated, with the Flashes sweeping all of their opponents. Lake View will face East Clarendon on Wednesday, which could be a tough game for the Wild Gators, who edged the Wolverines 2-1 in the first round. Johnsonville will face Branchville, who they swept 10-0 in round two.
In District VII, Green Sea-Floyds was eliminated, leaving Whale Branch to face the Lamar Silver Foxes on Wednesday. And in District V, Latta will have to overcome Bamberg-Ehrhardt twice to claim the district title.
CLASS AA SOFTBALL: All four Region 8-2A teams have advanced to the district championship, with Dillon and Aynor both undefeated in the playoffs. Dillon will face the Swansea Tigers, who they edged 2-1 in round two, while Aynor will face Silver Bluff, who they defeated 13-1 in their last encounter.
In District VI, Hanahan will host Waccamaw after sweeping the Warriors in their last encounter, and in District VII, Andrews will host Loris after defeating the Lions 5-2 in the first round.
CLASS AA BASEBALL: Dillon, Marion, and Waccamaw all advanced to the district finales, with Dillon and Marion undefeated in the playoffs. The Wildcats will host Academic Magnet after defeating the Raptors 7-2 on Saturday. Marion will host Swansea in their first playoff encounter. The Tigers were defeated by Woodland in round one, but swept them 9-0 on Monday to stay alive and earn a shot at Marion.
In District VI, Hanahan will host Waccamaw after defeating the Warriors 10-2 on Saturday, and in District VII, Bishop England will host Andrews. Dillon will likely face the Battling Bishops on Saturday in the first round of the Lower State playoffs.
