Vikings Triumph Over Wildcats 74-64 While Latta Ladies Down Dillon 54-48

After a slow start to the season in 2011, the Latta Viking boys and girls teams rang in the new year with wins over the Dillon Wildcats.

For the Lady Vikings, it was their first win of the season as they defeated Dillon 54-48.

Latta got off to an early start with a 19-10 lead in the first period. Dillon rallied in the second to outscore the Lady Vikings 17-13, but were still down 32-27 at the half. The Lady Wildcats added 12 points to Latta’s six in the third, but the Lady Vikings outscored Dillon 16-9 in the fourth to secure the win.

Tianna Deberry led the Lady Vikings with a team-high 19 points with Jessica Evans adding 15. Ta’keria Legette earned eight points and Maya Wright scored seven, with Jocelyn Vereen adding three and Silesia Braddy and Brittany Burgess each adding one.

Dillon’s Chelsea Frazier led all scorers with a game-high 21 points. Kedichia Sellers earned 12 points, with Jessica Swindler adding six, Briana Lee scoring five, Tara Grimsley earning three, and Pam Robinson sinking one basket for Dillon.

The Lady Vikings improve to 1-6 for the season and are 0-1 in Region 8A. Including recent tournament action, the Lady Wildcats are 8-3 for the season so far. Dillon won’t open region play until next week.

In the boys basketball game, the Vikings defeated the Wildcats 74-64.

Dillon got off to a 17-13 start but Latta went 25-9 in the second to give the Vikings a 38-26 lead at the half. The Wildcats rallied in the third to outscore Latta 21-15 but were still down 53-47 heading into the final quarter, where Latta held them off 18-16 for the win.

Latta’s D.J. Legette scored a game-high 22 points with Donell Stanley adding 16 and R.J. McClam scoring 12. Tyrell Sabb earned eight points, Rajit McFadden scored seven, Ty’sean Burgess scored four, and Darius Jones added three, with Ken’che Page adding two for the Vikings.

The Wildcats were led by John Caulder and Breon Page who each earned 17 points. Shaqui Cabbagestalk earned 11 points, Eri’reon Hayes added eight, and Lavarais Hargrove scored seven, with Montreal Morrison getting two points.

Latta improves to 4-5 with the win, with a 1-0 record in Region 8A. Dillon falls to 4-7 overall.

Next up, Latta will face another local region rival when they are scheduled to travel to Lake View to take on the Wild Gators on Friday at 6:00 p.m. Then on Tuesday, January 10, Latta will host Carvers Bay beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The Wildcats will be traveling to Fairmont on Thursday to take on the Golden Tornadoes beginning at 6:00 p.m. Dillon’s teams will play their first region game of the season on Tuesday, January 10, when they are scheduled to host Aynor beginning at 6:00 p.m.
