Eva Scott Celebrates 100th Birthday

By Carley Wiggins
On Saturday, November 12th, a big birthday celebration was held in honor of a very special lady, we were honored to be with her on this special day. Ms. Eva Scott lives on Sugar Hill Road near Floyd Dale where she has made her home for the last forty years. Friends and family came from all over came to honor this dear lady. Eva Scott had reached a milestone in her life that many people never see. On 11-11-11, Eva Scott was one hundred years old.
The yard and house was very tastefully decorated with lights and colored ribbons, a beautiful Christmas tree was decorated. I was told that this was her first Christmas tree ever. This was all done by her grandson, who is a florist by trade. A very well done program was held in Ms. Scott’s honor as different family members and friends offered welcomes to everyone, prayers were given, scripture was read, songs were sung, music was played and poems were recited. She can still recite a poem her mother taught her at age four. Afterwards, a great feast was held that everyone enjoyed.
One could see that Ms. Scott had meant a lot in her life to a lot of people. County Councilman Archie Scott was on hand to present Ms. Scott with a proclamation from the county. Eva Thompson Scott was born November 11, 1911, the daughter of Major and Emma Reaves Thompson. She was married to the late Alford Foy Scott and together they had nine children.
She has thirty grandchildren, forty great-grand children and ten great-great-grandchildren. Ms. Scott had six brothers and sisters. She had a loving step-father that she loved dearly, Fred Smith. Ms. Scott is the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Ms. Eva, as she is called by most spent most of her life working on the farm with her husband and rearing her children. She raised chickens and livestock, but was perhaps known best for her beautiful flowers she would grow and she always had a nice vegetable garden.
Ms. Eva was always faithful to her church and still reads her Bible daily. Her favorite scripture is Psalm 91. As a child she attended and baptized at Ebenezer Church in Robeson County, NC where she sang in the choir. Eva Scott may not have become someone famous, but to her family and to those who know her best, she has been a mentor and a great inspiration to follow. She has always stressed education to her children and their children. We wish for Ms. Eva as much time on this earth as God would allow and thank him for the legacy she will leave when he takes her home to be with him in glory.
