Lady Vikings Defeat Carvers Bay 3-1
After taking a loss to Dillon last Thursday, the Lady Vikings were looking to pick up a win on Monday when they defeated Carvers Bay 3-1 in girls volleyball action.
Latta won a series of close sets that saw them slip in game two, with final scores of 25-22, 15-25, 25-21, and 26-24 to give them the match.
Brittani Owens led the Lady Vikings with 19 kills and Hanna Jackson made 17, with each scoring two digs.
Tristan Martin and Maggie Sloan led in assists with Martin making 21 and Sloan getting 15.
Martin also made four aces, and Mikenzi Caniglia made five.
Latta’s Coach Kimberly Griffith says she is looking forward to seeing what the squad will do this year.
“We are incredibly young, lack a lot of height, but they have a tremendous amount of heart and hustle.”
Like many local teams, Latta lost several key players to graduation and headed into the season with new players in new positions. “We graduated all of our setters last year, so several girls are in a new position or got pulled up from JV to start this year. We are only returning two seniors and two juniors with playing experience.”
But despite a lack of experience, Coach Griffith expects great things. “I still have high expectations for this squad – almost as high as the ones they have for themselves.”
With the win, Latta’s record improves to 2-3 for the season.
Thursday, Latta hosted Lake View at 6:00 p.m. and on Monday, September 19, they’ll host the Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics at 6:00 p.m.
The junior varsity squad also hosted Lake View on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
