Community Health Center Week Being Celebrated

CareSouth Carolina is marking National Health Center Week 2011 with a weeklong mobile celebration. The Celebrate Community Health Centers Motorcar will be visiting every community CareSouth Carolina serves throughout the week. The celebration team will be setting up at each of CareSouth’s medical centers and will be bringing lots of snacks, drinks, music and fun with them.

“Each year we look forward to celebrating National Health Center Week and the many people who help us provide care to the community,” said Ann Lewis, CEO, CareSouth Carolina. “To show our appreciation this year, we thought we would simply provide some good cheer and appreciation – along with some goodies – for our patients and the people in the communities where we serve. Everyone is invited. Come out and visit!”

The theme of this year’s Health Center Week is “Celebrating America’s Health Centers: Serving Locally, Leading Nationally,” to underscore how health centers deliver a unique approach that targets health needs and saves taxpayer dollars. They are strong partnerships of people, governments and communities who work together to meet the unique and diverse health conditions of the community. Although health centers rely on a portion of federal funding, they are not a bureaucracy. In fact, they are run from the bottom up, by a patient-majority governing board who guides how limited resources can be effectively directed to meet the health care needs of the community. Their model of care was rated as one of the most effective programs by then-President George W. Bush’s Office of Management and Budget. Indeed, presidents from both parties and Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle have long-recognized the value of health centers and supported their expansion.

“Every day, we witness the value of having a health care home,” said Roosevelt Daniel, Chief Medical Officer. “When people have a place to go for regular care, they use it and stay healthier. Our patients not only get the care they need, but they are treated as individuals, with dignity and respect. This is what health care should be, and what we celebrate during National Health Center Week.”

As a community health center, CareSouth Carolina has been providing family health care services in the Pee Dee for over 30 years. In 2010, CareSouth Carolina served over 35,000 patients, 49% of whom had no health insurance. CareSouth Carolina operates centers in Bennettsville, Bishopville, Chesterfield, Cheraw, Hartsville, Lake View, McColl, and Society Hill. Services provided by CareSouth Carolina include family practice, pediatrics, OB-GYN, geriatrics, social services, clinical counseling, laboratory, X-Ray and the operation of the CSC Community Pharmacy. This past year, CSC launched its Miles of Smiles Dental Program which provides dental services in the schools for children with no other access. The organization has grown from a small community health center with four employees in Society Hill to a regional health care system headquartered in Hartsville with ten primary care sites and over 300 employees. CareSouth Carolina is recognized as a national model of success in the delivery of health services to those in need in rural communities.
