Matthews Named Principal Of Elementary School In Florence

At a recent meeting, the Florence One Board of Trustees approved the appointment of two new principals hired to fill the vacancies left by administrators at Dewey L. Carter Elementary School and at Moore Intermediate School. The new appointments will take effect July 1, 2011.
One of the new hires was Luke Matthews, who has been named principal at Dewey L. Carter Elementary. He is currently completing his seventh year as assistant principal at Darlington Middle School. He received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Francis Marion University and a Master of Education from Cambridge College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Matthews began his educational career in Florence One teaching sixth grade at North Vista Elementary. He later taught pre-algebra, science, and Communities-in-Schools as well as Falcon Academy of Excellence, a program for at-risk students in Darlington County.
He is a husband, father of four children, church deacon and pianist. He enjoys biking, carpentry, and auto mechanics. He is also the grandson of Dillon County’s late Roger W. Scott, Sr.
