Xzavier Williams Is JVM’s Top Reader

Xzavier Williams, an eighth-grader at J.V. Martin Junior High School, was recently honored as the school’s Reader of the Year for 2010-2011. This award is given annually to one student. Criteria used in selecting the winner include:
– Student is an active participant in the many aspects of the school’s reading initiative, such as the Reading Counts! program, the summer reading program, the South Carolina Junior Book Awards program, the Lunch Bunch Book Club, and the Poetry Slam.
– Student demonstrates characteristics of a lifelong reader and learner.
– Student is recommended for the award by his team teachers.
In giving this award, the school hopes to recognize the importance of reading and to encourage students to become lifelong readers and learners. Xzavier was presented an engraved plaque and a $100 cash prize. His name has also been added to a plaque which is on permanent display in the J.V. Martin Media Center.
Five other J.V. Martin students were honored as Reader of the Year Honor Roll recipients. These students, Matthew Buckner, Taylor Cribbs, William Dunson, John Hayes, and Qy’Darrius McEachern, all received certificates for their achievement. Their names also appear on a framed certificate which will remain on permanent display in the J.V. Martin Media Center.
