LVHS International Club Wins Adopt-A-Highway Award

The LVHS International Club is not just an organization that sits around with idle hands. Recently, they were named Dillon County’s winner in the Adopt-A-Highway program for its efforts of keeping the roads of Lake View clean.
The group adopted a highway two years ago in the Lake View community. Their road is a 2.5 mile stretch leading out of the town of Lake View towards Nichols stopping a little past Bear Swamp Road.
Club members pick up trash three to four times each year. Their trash pick ups average about 100 pounds of trash that are no longer on the road.
Recently, a representative group of club members attended the SC Department of Transportation’s award banquet at Seawell’s in Columbia. The SCDOT recognized forty-eight (48) organizations and groups from among 3,000 volunteer organizations across the state. The club and its advisor were proud to accept the award representing the city of Lake View and Dillon County.
LVHS International Club members are also involved in an academic mentoring program with the Lake View Elementary School. Two days each week high school students go into the second grade classes of April Blackmon, Donna Cox, and Stephanie Long. They teach the students French basics such as greetings, colors, activities, and numbers. In addition, they teach French songs and play games. This volunteer program achieves the main goal of the club of exposing others to different languages and cultures. They are excited about introducing the youngsters to the French language and hope that they will grow up with a strong desire to pursue language study.
The International Club celebrated its annual Foreign Language Night on Cinco de Mayo (May 5, 2011) from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the LVHS cafeteria. This event is an open house for the language department. Many student assignments and presentations will be displayed.
The advisor to the LVHS International Club is Ramona McKoy-Cummings. She is currently a French teacher at Lake View High School and has taught Spanish in the past.
