Mattie Strickland Named UDC (S.C. Division) Honorary President

Mattie Wallace Strickland was elected an Honorary President of the South Carolina Division, United Daughters of the Confederacy, at the One Hundred Fourteenth Annual Convention of the South Carolina Division held at the Town & Country Inn in Charleston, South Carolina on September 23-25, 2010.  Mattie was accepted into the membership of the UDC on December 20, 1959 as a member of the Ann Fulmore Harllee Chapter No. 1740, Dillon, SC.  At the present, she is Chapter President, and has been an active and devoted member since she joined.  She has served as President numerous times as well as Vice-President, Recording Secretary, Treasurer, Reporter, and Corresponding Secretary, and on the following chapter committees: Yearbook and Hospitality, Finance, Flag Chairman, Telephone, and Children of the Confederacy (1960’s) when we had a children’s chapter.  She has also served on the Finance and Nominating Committees of the SC Division, and three different
times as Recording Secretary of the Pee Dee District.  Mattie has represented our Chapter many times at events held by the Sons of the Confederacy.  Four generations of her family have had Certificates of Membership- her Mother, herself, her daughter, and her granddaughter have shared this proud legacy.
An Honorary President is a member who has given outstanding service to the Division over a period of at least 15 years, has at least 20 years of continuous membership, and has not served as Division President.  Henrietta D. (Retta) Tindal, our SC Division President, presented her with ribbons of office (sash) during our Business Meeting on Friday, September 24, 2010.  Mattie is a natural leader, and has served her Chapter with honor for over 50 years.  Congratulations to a very deserving Southern Lady!
