The South Carolina delegation to the Special Olympics National Games returned home victorious Saturday with 131 medals.

Among the competitors was 15-year old Christopher McLeod of Dillon, whose team, the SC Hornets, took the Silver medal in unified Team Football (Soccer).

The Hornets played in Division Brown against the Oregon Dawgs and Rhode Island. The Hornets were victorious against Oregon in both games, but tied Rhode Island in their first game and lost by one point in the finals.

Unified sports teams are made up of Special Olympics athletes as well as players without intellectual disabilities. The idea behind the program is to promote fun and fitness among athletes and partners while overcoming prejudices about intellectual disability.

The national games were held in Lincoln, Nebraska from July 18–23.

Among the other notable highlights was a new Special Olympic Record in Golf set by Scott Rohrer of York, SC. Scott finished round one of the Level V 18-hole individual stroke play event with a record round score of 71.

The total medal count for South Carolina included 33 Gold, 52 Silver, and 46 Bronze medals.
