SCV Camp 1576 Holds Memorial Ceremony

The Sons of Confederate Veterans Col. E.T. Stackhouse Camp 1576 held their Annual Memorial Ceremony on Sunday April 25 at the Veterans Park on Main Street in Latta.
The camp is named in honor of Col. E.T. Stackhouse.  The ceremony began with the posting of the colors by the Stafford Militia and the pledges were recited to the U.S. flag, the South Carolina flag, the Christian flag and the Confederate flag.
Three Confederate widows read the roll call of the dead.  The Rev. Dr. John Bumgardner, Jr. gave the invocation. The commander of Camp 1576, James Price, welcomed the 64 in attendance and talked about the common soldiers life during the war years.  He then introduced Mrs. Kevin Lassen, President of the Ellison Capers Chapter #70 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, who talked about today’s children and teaching them the history and heritage of the South.  Then, Mark Simpson was introduced as the guest speaker.  He is the South Carolina SCV Division Commander.  He spoke about the Confederacy and also the importance of preserving its history.
The Stafford Militia, a rifle honor guard, was led down the street and into the park by two cavalrymen.  A rifle salute was conducted followed by an artillery salute from the Conway Light Artillery.  The playing of Taps followed the military salutes.
The camp is over 60 members strong in only its second year of existence and meets every third Monday of the month.
