The Carolina Wings Chicks moved temporarily to a 2-game lead over the Physicians Healthcare Rose Buds in the Kiwanis Girls Sotball League Tuesday evening with a 9-7 nail-biter win over Missy’s Lucky Charms.

The Lucky Charms, still looking for their first win within the league, tied the Chicks with six runs in the bottom of the third of a scheduled 4-inning game. The Chicks had scored four runs in the first inning on six walks and an error and then picked up two more in the top of the 3rd on Tyieshah Jones’s two-run inside the park homerun. Trailing 6-0, Macy Johnson slapped a double to send Kurstin Hopkins across the plate with the first Lucky Charms run. Brianna Froneberger hit an infield grounder for the second out that scored Johnson to cut the lead to Chick’s lead to 6-2. After Hannah Hyler was hit by a pitch, Emilee Price and Jazmine Clement worked reliever Brittany for consecutive walks to load the bases. Nicole Clement’s double to right field cleared the bases to pull to within a run and she scored the tying run when Summer Tyler hit safely to left. Alex Lane led off the Chicks half of the 4th inning with a double and was followed by a walk to Aexia Pinckney. That set the stage for a perfectly executed bunt by Tori Grimsley that loaded the bases. Taylor Brown’s ground out allowed two runs to score and Brittany Miller’s single gave the Chicks a 9-6 lead going into the last at bat for the Lucky Charms. Tori Grimsley, the starting pitcher, returned to the mound to pitch the final inning and gave up a single to Johnson and a run-scoring double to Sha Miya McLellan, but settled down to strike out two of the final three batters to preserve the win for Miller. Shay McCrimmon added a single for the winners and Hannah Hyler hit safely for the Lucky Charms.

The Physicians Healthcare Rose Buds crept back to within a game of the Chicks with an 11-0 blanking of the Lucky Charms in the second game. Marissa Tyndall drove in the first two runs for the Rose Buds with a no-out single in the first inning and scored the third on Akuria “Lefty” Smiley’s misplayed hit to the infield. Smiley scored on the same play to give Physicians Healthcare a 4-0 lead. After holding the Lucky Charms to only one base runner in three innings, the Rose Buds pounded out four hits in the bottom of the 3rd to score seven runs and the game was called because of an 11-run rule.

Taylor Blackmon singled and tropled and Briana Williams had two hits to lead the hitting for the winners. Leah Stephens and Smiley had singles and Malissa Owens smashed a double in the Rose Buds 7-hit attack. The only hit for the Lucky Charms came in the first inning when Sha Miya McLellan tripled to the opposite field and was thrown out at the plate trying to stretch the hit to a home run.

On Thursday evening (Oct. 15), the Rose Buds (5-2) and Chicks (6-1) were to meet again to battle for first place.
